The training programme should be used in conjunction with the following:

-        The Highway Code.

-        Driving - The Essential Skills.

-        The Essential Towing Handbook.

-        Know your Traffic Signs.

We recommend that you read these books prior to starting your Trailer Training Course.

The more knowledge that you have, the easier the task will be.

Conventions and abbreviations used in this website

Throughout this website, there may be references to 'he', this convention is used simply for convenience the person is just as likely to be a 'she'.

To help you navigate through this manual, we've set up the following abbreviations:

DVLA                   -        Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency

MSM                   -        Mirrors Signal Manoeuvre

MPH                    -        Miles Per Hour

Vehicle                -        Towing Car/Van

Combination        -        Vehicle and Trailer

Cat B                   -        Category B driving licence (Car)

Cat B+E              -        Category B+E (Car + Trailer)

Trailer                -        The caravan, horsebox, boat trailer, cargo trailer etc. being towed behind the towing vehicle

Combination    -        The towing vehicle and trailer

Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM)          -        The MAM is the maximum total weight of the trailer.  The maximum potential weight and its contents as shown on the weight plate or manufacturer's handbook that a vehicle or trailer is designed to carry and not the actual weight. It is set by the vehicles manufacturer, which includes the vehicle weight and the load carried. It is the same as the older terms: permissible maximum weight and maximum gross weight.

Nose weight      -        The downward pressure on the towball exerted by the trailer

Towbar               -        The support fitted to the towing vehicle on which the towball is mounted

Towball              -        A steel ball, mounted to the towbar that connects to the trailers coupling head.

Coupling head -        Attached to the drawbar, the coupling head locks onto the towball

Drawbar            -        The assembly that is part of the trailer and on which the trailer coupling head is mounted

Breakaway cable      -        The cable connecting the trailer's braking mechanism to the towing vehicle.  For trailers over 750kg.

Jockey wheel    -        A wheel that is mounted to the drawbar and can be lowered to support the trailer when it is not connected to the towing vehicle

Stabiliser           -        A device that can help to improve the stability of the combination by increasing friction at the joint between the towing vehicle and the trailer

Snaking              -        A swaying, side to side movement of the trailer when towing

Trailer cutting    -        The trailer will always take a shorter route than the towing vehicle when cornering. Allow additional space when cornering to allow for the trailer cutting the corner
